Borderlands Offers Free Update That Will Raise Level Cap And More

Gearbox announced at PAX this weekend that the most user-requested features will not be added to the new Borderlands DLC, Claptrap’s New Robot Revolution. Don’t worry, though, they have good reason, and salvation.

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford told a live PAX audience that his studio resisted making it a part of the new DLC pack since, if they included the new features, “you’d have to buy every previous DLC” to get access to said features. So, instead as Pitchford explains, Gearbox is going to release a free update to Borderlands that will both “rebalance the original game around the level cap and increase the level cap for everyone.”

So, the most requested features, the new level cap and the rebalancing of the game, will be available, just not as a part of a new DLC. The free update comes as a gift, and leads us to believe that since it will not be included as part of a DLC, the new DLC will have possible new features packed within.

Pitchford did go into explaining that the developer had some struggles with how high to raise the actual cap to leveling. On one hand Gearbox didn’t want to match the 11-point upgrade which many people paid for with the General Knox DLC, yet on the other hand the developer didn’t want it to be too low. So to remedy the situation Gearbox decided to make the level cap 69, which added eight new levels to attain.

With the PAX audience groaning, we find out that the new update should release somewhere around October 12th, which is also the release of the Borderlands: Game Of The Year Edition.
