Another Kinect Hack, This One Helpful In Reading Sign Language

One idea that stands out, and stands out so obviously, in the long line of Kinect hacks is the ability to use it to help people learn American Sign Language. This is exactly what researchers over at Georgia Tech College of Computing are working on. They are attempting to pai Microsoft’s Kinect peripheral with custom-written software that previously recorded colored gloves that were knitted with wrist-mounted accelerometers. Within a series of tests designed to test the accuracy of the peripheral, the researchers achieved an overall accuracy rating of 99.98%. This is simply amazing research.

These results mean that the research team will be comprising updates including a more vast vocabulary which focuses on the necessity of “hand shape features.” With hacks like these, we can only imagine what will come next. Who knew that things like this would come from a gaming peripheral?
