Star Trek Online To Go Free To Play

When games go free to play it generally either Increases sales and membership or completely does the opposite. Hopefully making Star Trek Online free to play will help not hurt the game, but that information will have to wait, mainly because it doesn’t exist. Star Trek Online is a MMO that currently costs between $12.99 and $14.99 amonth depending on how many months you buy at a time. There is also a point system call Cryptic points in which you buy points with real money and then buy in game items with the Cryptic points.

Back in May Perfect World gained Cryptic Studios and under the new owner ship the game will be going free to play by the end of the year. It will be the second game for Cryptic Studios to be free to play, the first being Champions Online.

The chief financial officer for Perfect World was quoted in a call to investors saying  the reason for free to play Star Trek Online is to “have a bigger potential in the US market and also in China market.”  I can see how making the game free to play can possibly boost potential. Perfect world could possibly be gearing up for some big updates that could cost money and want as many users as possible already invested in the game. But that is purely my own speculation, so don’t put much stock in it.
