Wasteland 2 Breaks A Million On Kickstarter In 3 Days

Last year Kickstarter really took of and showed that crowdsourced funding was a real way for people to get money for their projects. At the end of 2011, the highest grossing project was just over $900,000. That seems impressive, but in the three and a half months we’ve trekked into 2012, that number has been topped twice. Both were by video games.

By now everyone already knows of the success of Double Fine Adventure. At $3.3 million, it showed us that video game players can band together and put money into the hands of a developer they care about. However, it already has a contender for the throne. At the time of writing, Wasteland 2 has generated over $1.1 million, surpassing their hefty $900,000 goal.

This sequel to the game that spawned the Fallout franchise (if only in a spiritual sense) has been in need of funding for a long while. In fact, Brian Fargo, who owns the rights to the game actually gave up on the game, as he couldn’t find a publisher who was willing to fund it. Only after the initial success of Double Fine Adventure did he decide that the time might be at hand.

While the game has already surpassed its goal, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t contribute. They have some kick-ass rewards ranging from a $15 digital copy of the game to an in-game statue created in your likeness, and everything in-between. Yes, even an exploded blood sausage. You’ve got a little over a month to get on it, and who knows, maybe they’ll surpass Double Fine.
