If you’ve picked yourself up a shiny new PS Vita, and have been telling yourself that you need a VoIP phone, then you’ll be happy to know that you don’t need another device. Thanks to the new Skype app for Sony’s handheld, you can place and accept calls whenever you like, so long as you have a data connection.
The app is free, and will run in the background on your device. This means you can be in the middle of a game, and be notified when someone is calling you. Then you can answer, just as if you were using any other smartphone.
Be advised that using your Vita like this can cause two very big problems. First, running any software in the background for extended periods can have an effect on your battery. Second, if you have a small data plan, you can quickly eat through it while chatting on the phone to your friends and family. If you keep these in mind, you can turn your mobile console into a mobile phone for free.
