With all of the exploring and building that you can do in Minecraft, it’s easy to get lost in the game’s splendor. However, have you ever stopped to notice the fact that there aren’t any female characters (at least not without adding them in yourself)? What’s interesting is that this isn’t an oversite on the creator’s part, it was intentional.
According to a recent blog post, Notch explains that the character model you see is “intended to represent a Human Being. Not a male Human Being or a female Human Being, but simply a Human Being.” While it’s true that the character has been nicknamed Steve, Notch is firm on the fact that all characters and monsters in the game are completely genderless.
At the end of the post, he took the opportunity to make a joke about the fact that in a genderless society, everyone must be homosexual. “Take THAT, homophobes!”
