Radeon 7970 Gets GHz Speeds With Leaked BIOS

Last month AMD released the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition, which effectively placed the crown for fastest single-GPU card back on their head. The new card boasted a core clock speed of 1000MHz (1050MHz PowerTune Boost) with  and a GDDR5 clock or 1500MHz. While this was great for new adopters, what about those who already bought one of the existing 7970’s? Well it looks like you might be in luck.

While there are already ways to overclock your card, it looks like you can now get the same advantages of the GHz edition with a simple BIOS flash. The only hardware difference between the two cards is the presence of more accurate sensors for the PowerTune Boost. Other than that, your old 925MHz core clock and 1375MHz memory clock will be brought in line with the GHz edition cards.

So will this work perfectly for every card? No. Right now it’s hard to say which cards will and won’t work. And since the BIOS file is not one officially released by AMD for this purpose, you will be taking a risk using it. But then again, there is some amount of risk whenever you attempt to overclock your hardware.
