Mojang And The UN Team Up

When it comes to creating worlds, Minecraft is quite the powerful tool. By selecting and placing different blocks and features, a person can create giant spires that tower into the heavens, or vast underground fortresses that would make the dwarves of Moria jealous. So, if people can recreate fantasy worlds in Minecraft, why not use it for more practical, real life applications?

That’s the idea of Mojang and UN Habitat’s newest collaboration “Block by Block”. It’s purpose is to empower young people in urban environments to “show planners and decision makes how they would like to see their cities in the future”. What happens is that a team will create the urban environment in question, and the local youths who want to help shape their future will go ahead and mold the area to their needs and wants.

Right now, the pilot project in Nairobi is already in planning phases. By 2016, however, the partnership is hoping to have 300 different public spaces upgraded thanks to this initiative. Mojang is the main financial sponsor for Block by Block, and I’m willing to bet that when all is said and done, it’ll be money well spent!
