Online Scammers Working To Acquire Guild Wars 2 Accounts

AreaNet has discovered that scammers online have obtained a list of Guild Wars 2 usernames and passwords from other sites and they’re using a system to try each login repeatedly. There’s not been any word of success yet, but it’s still a potential threat to all accounts. This isn’t uncommon in the world of MMO games and online gaming, however it’s still very aggravating.

The developer is putting the blame players using one single password across numerous logins. Their advice, as always, is to create a unique password specifically for Guild Wars 2, and though many hear the advice hardly any actually listen. Considering that it’s really good advice, it’s sad when this happens due to failure to heed it.

AreaNet offered this warning to players:

“If your current password isn’t unique to Guild Wars 2, change it today. Do not under any circumstances use the same password for Guild Wars 2 as you do for your email account.”

Furthering the details from the developer it looks like “hundreds of thousands” of attempts to compromise accounts have been made against ones that don’t even exist on the game’s servers. There’s a large group simultaneously and systematically attempting different combinations of usernames and passwords to get into these accounts. Make sure you’ve taken the correct security measures against losing your account until this blows over, if it does.
