Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm Release Date Announced, Special Editions Detailed

Blizzard has finally come forth and revealed that Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm will release on March 12th next year. Though we’ve seen some spoilers, heard some rumors, and been waiting patiently, this is the official and final word from the developer. We’ve a horizon to look forward to now.

Heart of the Swarm is the first expansion set for Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty. The game has been planned all along to become a trilogy, which means we’ll see one more expansion after this one releases. Heart of the Swarm brings with it a tuft of new units as well as a new campaign that centers on Sarah Kerrigan, the Queen of Blades, as she leads a Zerg swarm toward Arcturus Mengsk.

When the expansion releases players will be able to choose from three different versions. These versions will be the Standard Edition, Digital Deluxe Edition (only available online), and the Colloector’s Edition (only available to certain retail locations.) The Standard Version comes with just the game, while the Digital Deluxe Edition will include a range of bonus content for Starcraft II, World of Warcraft, and Diablo III. The content will include three Starcraft II Swarm-themed portrait photos for Battle.net, the Starcraft II Zerg Ultralisk “Torrasque” skin, a World of Warcraft Baneling Battle Pet, and the Diablo III “Blade Wings” item as well as the Zerg banner sigil. The Collector’s Edition will get all of the above, plus a behind-the-scenes DVD/Blu-Ray, a soundtrack CD, a Zerg-rush mousepad, and a hardcover art book.
