Microsoft’s IllumiRoom Turns Your Room Into A Giant Screen

The thing that I love about trade shows is that we get to see some really awesome (and crazy) products and concepts from different companies. For instance, we saw Nvidia announce a new handheld device, and Valve unleash a Steam Box. So, it’s not too surprising to see Microsoft and Samsung get into the oddball concept game.

During Samsung’s keynote yesterday the IlliumiRoom was shown off, and from that video it looks pretty sweet. The way it works is that a Kinect is paired with a projector, which takes geometrical data from the room and feeds that date to a projector. The projector then blasts the expanded imagery onto the walls to help make a more immersive experience for the user.

So as cool as this looks, I can think of a few problems with the IllumiRoom that would keep it from being more than just a gimmick. For one, not everybody’s TV is set on the middle of the wall in a darkened room. And lets face it, the cost of a projector along with the Kinect is something that most people aren’t going to want to pay for, especially if they have a cluttered room that might not play well with the projector in the first place. But, with that being said, it still looks pretty cool. Maybe it’s something that will pop up as an option for the next Xbox?
