The Showdown Effect Dev Diaries Promise Cliché Brawler Action

For those of you who may not have yet heard, Paradox Interactive’s The Showdown Effect is a thing that’s happening. What is this new title? The Source denotes it as a 2.5D Combat Game, not unlike many that have come before it. Touting the most cliché of action heroes duking it out in a pocket-dimension for fame, glory, and plot relevance, this game looks like it might just deliver some hearty chuckles.

The developer, Arrowhead Game Studios, may sound familiar to your ears, as their last title, Magicka, was a bit of a hit on PC. Let’s hope that they bring the same kind of quirky gold that they’ve already shown us they can produce to their new title. As the devs were so kind as to provide a video showcasing some of their characters, we get an inside look at just what kind of game we can expect, and a glimpse of what mayhem awaits us:

One thing they did not mention in the video is the large assortment of weapons that is being touted on the website for the game. From the sound of it, the arenas will be littered with grabbable items that range from actual weapons, to things that aren’t exactly weapons, but could be used as weapons. Along with this, they also boast satisfying platforming and responsive controls, the latter of which is a great indication of a game that hopefully plays well.

If you’re interested in the game’s Beta, sign-ups are happening on the main site, and the full game is out March 5th, 2013.

Do you find this sort of kitschy, over-the-top action hero business endearing, or somewhat overplayed as of late? Are you perhaps looking forward to the prospect of this game? Or do you just want to wave hello? Let us know in the comments!
