Former Diablo 3 Director Not Happy With The Auction Houses He Created

Former game director Jay Wilson thought that adding auction houses to Diablo III would help things out. He assumed that they’d reduce fraud from gold farmers, that only a small percentage of players would actually end up using the system in the first place, and that the price of items would end up limiting how many ended up listed or sold. Turns out his assumptions were a bit wrong.

Nearly every player has ended up using the house, and 50 percent of active players are still using it regularly. This in turn leads to problems with the auction house, as prices start fluctuating wildly and money becomes the main motivator for the game, and not killing Diablo as Jay Wilson wants. The game has essentially become all about the economy, and he’s not too happy about it.

Is there anything that Blizzard can do about the auction house? Mr. Wilson does say that he thinks that “we would turn it off if we could” but because they don’t know if many people like or hate the system, they don’t want to remove it and earn the wrath of the fans. I guess next time Blizzard will think a bit more carefully and do a bit more research before they assume that something is going to work the way they want it to work.
