12 GB Flash Version Of PS3 Coming To North America

If you’re looking to pick up a brand new PS3 but you don’t want to spend $270 on it, you’ll be glad to know that there’s a cheaper version coming state-side soon! According to leaks from Canadian store Future Shop, and Kmart of all places, it’s been all but confirmed that a 12 GB PS3 is coming soon. The price? Merely $199, according to Future Shop.

According to the sticker on the shipping box that the PS3s came in, you can get this flash-based PS3 on August 18th. This particular model has been on sale in Europe and Hong Kong for some time, but until now it had yet to come to North America. When it was first announced, Sony had said that the reason why we weren’t getting it had to do with the “digital consumer” in North America. In other words, 12 GBs was going to be too small for Americans, so why bother selling it?

Of course, that’s no longer the case apparently. Microsoft has done well enough selling their 4 GB Xbox 360, so it only makes sense for Sony to see that and go “we can do that too!” And hey, couple in the fact that the PS3 allows for swapping out hard drives, and the fact that the 12 GB PS3 has 3 times as much space as the comparable Xbox 360, and it was only a matter of time before Sony tried their hand as well.
