DIY Nerf Lancer

By Feigned, Friday, November 21st, 2008

Man, I remember some of my favorite toys as a kid being made by Nerf. No, I’m not talking about their footballs and stuff. My brother and I had all sorts of guns and weapons that we used on each other all the time. I recall one of my favorites being a belt-fed chain gun that could fire off something like 5 rounds per second. That thing was awesome. But as far as looks go, nothing can top this excellent Nerf Lancer.

If you’ve ever spent any time playing Gears of War, you’ll understand why this hunk of plastic is so cool. Unfortunately you aren’t going to find this sitting on any store shelves, as it is a custom piece. Luckily its creator was kind enough to document every step they took, complete with picture. So if you’re looking to make your own Nerf Lancer, this is how its done.

  • DIY Child’s Mega Man Costume

By Feigned, Monday, October 20th, 2008

Halloween is just around the corner, so if you don’t already have a costume in mind, you’d better get cracking. If you have kids, then you’ve got your work cut out for you.  Sure, you could go to the store and pick up any run-of-the mill costume, but who wants to be dressed just like everyone else? No, what you need to do is make a costume that will really set your kid apart from the rest. They need a homemade Mega Man costume.

This isn’t the sort of costume that you throw together at the last minute either, so you’re going to need to get started pretty soon. On the bright side, your kid will have the coolest costume ever. There are full instructions on how to make the boots, glove, suit, helmet and of course, the Mega Buster. And I thought my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle costume from back in the day was cool.

  • The NES Bong

By Kat, Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Now this is a mod that you will quickly get to enjoy your work if you gave it a try.  It also would never become outdated technology and could be fun for the whole family.  Even fluffy, your significant other’s yappy dog.  It will no longer work to game with, but at least you could have a bit of geek cred while enjoying yet another of your favorite past times.  The mod was sent into Gizmodo by one of their readers, James.  Who didn’t really provide much instructions, just a couple of pictures.  So hopefully if you’d like to try this out yourself you’re good at pulling off a decent DIY just from the pictures.  One more pic after the jump.

  • Toaster modded into an NES

By Kat, Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

    nestoaster_1.jpg

Here’s another cool mod for you, but sadly unlike the Companion Cube it doesn’t really have a lot of details to go with it. Besides several pictures and a video that reveals very little about the mod. The video really only demonstrates that to turn on the device you push down on the toaster lever and to turn it off you pull up. It also shows that they have stayed with the power cord that came with the toaster. So if you’d like to try this one out, likely you’re just going to have to wing it from the pictures and the brief but entertaining video. The brilliant idea came about from the modder, Stupidfingers, realizing that he not only had an extra toaster but an extra NES as well. You can see the overabundance of pictures on his site here.

  • The Weighted Companion Cube Subwoofer

By Kat, Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Anyone who still has the thought that gamers are a bunch of lazy bums who just sit and play games all day would only have to take a look at the number of game inspired mods to know that’s myth. This latest mod took several months to complete. The Weighted Companion Cube has now been modded into a subwoofer. Soon the modder, d_stilgar, will actually be creating two Portal inspired speakers to match the Companion Cube. Although sadly, he’s not telling what they’ll look like just yet. More pics after the jump.

  • Super-Sized SNES Controller

By Feigned, Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

    Super-Sized SNES Controller

I’m sure that everyone remembers the giant controller that Microsoft shipped with the original Xbox. That thing was so big that you had to use your feet just to reach all of the buttons. Well someone decided that they should make a Super Nintendo Controller that’s of equal size, just for fun.

This controller measures 40 inches wide (I don’t have the exact measurements, but that’s pretty close to the Xbox controller) and was made completely to scale. Yes, all of the buttons work and they are hooked up to an actual SNES controller.

Sure, no one really needs a gigantic video game controller, but this would definitely be cool to see. If you’re interested in the construction process, check out the step-by-step guide at the SCAD website.

  • DIY Handheld Atari Game

    DIY Handheld Atari Game

Whenever I leave the house, I generally take my DS along to keep me entertained. If I don’t remember to grab it, I at least have my trusty iPhone, which isn’t bad for gaming in short spurts. However, neither of them really satisfy my craving for classic Atari games (though my iPhone does have a couple). So what’s one to do when they want some classic gaming fun on the go? You build your own portable Atari game.

    DIY Handheld Atari Game

Someone has fashioned a portable (albeit chunky) game by taking one of those cheap Namco TV Games and installing it into a new plastic shell with a 2.5” LCD screen. It looks like it took a bit of work, but in the end you can enjoy your favorite Atari games for around two and a half hours off of 4x AA batteries. You can even hook up a charger if you’re using rechargeable batteries. The only downside is the lack of sound support.
