Occasionally, there are games that offer all three in one package. It’s looking like Journey, which will be coming out this coming Spring, will be one such master piece.

The game is set in a desert-looking world we know nothing about, and is looks absolutely fantastical. There are no real instructions, other than the knowledge that you need to get to the mountain in the distance. The interactions you have with other characters are not vocalized other than tones and actions, which makes the use of sound so much more important.

The video below gives you a sample of the music that you will be spending time with during the game. Having music with a lot of emotion might crop up once or twice in any game you play. This is merely used to get some specific reaction from the player, but in this case, music seems to be both a sort of companion and guide in the vast, endless world. It is beautiful, and will likely completely immerse you into the story. If you want to see some game play, you can go here to catch the first 20 minutes.
Source

A Live Performance Of ‘Build That Wall’ From The Bastion Musicians

Music

PC Gaming

videos

XBLA

Xbox 360

Bastion is a great game, sure. As you know, Bastion broke the 500k mark in sales, and understandably the crew at Supergiant Games is excited.

Filmed in the Supergiant studio, Darren Korb and Ashley Barret give us a great live performance of some of the tunes from the game. All together we get to hear “Build That Wall” and “Setting Sail, Coming Home.” The duo works very well together, and it’s a great session.

I love the game, and the soundtrack is awesome. I don’t tend to get into the music of games very much, but Bastion was an exciting exception. Make some time and watch the performance video below. On top of that, we also love adorable songs that get stuck in our heads for months. All I need say is Badgers, Kenya, and Magical Trevor, and I have ruined you for at least the next two hours.

The same makers of these video extravaganzas have created Russian Dancing Men. You get to travel through various worlds that go with songs that speak of amazing horses, crabs, and narwhals. There are only four buttons to control your dancing comrade, with conveniently only four different obstacles to face. You have a loops, pits, hurdles, and spikes to avoid, but at least you do it to the beat of some snazzy music.

It is a rhythm game, so you should try to have some knowledge of the songs beforehand, as they have some tempo changes in the middle of the songs. That will make things pretty difficult if you aren’t expecting it. I was sold on the fact that there’s a new song in the game, but it looks like a fun way to pass time on the bus. Even more fun if you play it without headphones on, so everyone can join in your songs.
Source

Closure: A Game That Only Exists In The Light

Indie Games

Music

Puzzle Games

If you were ever afraid of there being monsters in the dark, you were likely told at least once that there was nothing there. While you thought that those sort of statements were complete rubbish, you knew somewhere deep inside that they were right.

Similarly to those statements heard in your childhood, Closure is a game that took that to heart. Ok, they took it a little too far, but that adds to the fun of it! This game is one set in an almost nightmarish world of scribbly-looking black and white. The point of the game is to stay in or on things that are illuminated by a orb that your character carries. It’s a pretty suspenseful game, seeing as there are moving bits and bobs that you have to react very quickly to. Unless of course, you’d rather fall into the great abyss of darkness underneath you.

Tyler Glaiel and Jon Schubbe spent three years making this magical world happen, and they put some amazing music in to accompany this game. There is an older flash version they have done that you can play here, but this newer, updated version is going to blow the old one out of the water as they stated in their FAQ: “The difference between the flash version and this one is the difference between the original Mario Bros. arcade game and Super Mario World for the SNES.” It’s got about six to eight hours of game play with about 100 levels for you to figure out. Who’s ready for suspense and quick thinking?
Source

Batman: Arkham City Sountrack Announced

Announcements

Music

Whenever a blockbuster movie is released, it is usually accompanied by a soundtrack. This makes sense, as a movie wouldn’t be nearly as entertaining without the proper music. The same goes for video games, only it’s not quite so common to get a soundtrack with it, especially not one filled with tracks from big name artists. However, the people at Warner Bros. felt that Batman: Arkham City needed one.

With a lineup consisting of artists like Coheed and Cambria, Serj Tankian, and Panic! At The Disco, you can bet that this is going to be an excellent album. What’s more, is that it won’t simply be a collection of previously-available tracks. Rather, each artist was given the chance to offer their own musical interpretation of the Batman mythology. Here’s the full lineup:

1. Panic! At The Disco – Mercenary
2. Coheed and Cambria – Deranged
3. The Duke Spirit – Creature
4. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Shadow On The Run
5. Blaqk Audio - Afterdark
6. The Raveonettes – Oh, Stranger
7. (Crosses) – The Years
8. The Damned Things – Trophy Widow
9. Daughtry – Drown In You
10. The Boxer Rebellion – Losing You
11. Serj Tankian – Total Paranoia

*Bonus Collector’s Edition track
12. A Place to Bury Strangers – In The Shadow

So when will you get your hands on the soundtrack? It will go on sale October 4th, two weeks before the game becomes available. No word on the price, however, your best bet might be to just get the collector’s edition of the game, which will include the album, plus the bonus track listed above.
Source

Halo Anniversary Goes All Out With Soundtrack

Bungie

Music

One of the most iconic things about the Halo Franchise would most definitely be its unforgettable and unmistakable soundtrack. From the E minor piano to the ominous chanting, the music of Halo is easily one of the most popular and most distinguishable in the video game world. With Marty O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori composing every track just for Halo and Halo alone, it’s no surprise how well the music fits with every moment in all the games.

Halo Anniversary is set to release November 15 of this year, the game is developed by 343 industries, not Bungie. Which means no Marty O’Donnell, but don’t lose faith yet. According to Halo.Xbox.com, 343 Industries (which is mostly former Bungie employees) has been at the Skywalker ranch working with Skywalker sound, a division of Lucas Digital motion picture group to re-master and re-orchestrate the original Halo: Combat Evolved soundtrack.

At first I was skeptical of this 343 Industries, but with the news of Skywalker sound, and the reassuring fact that some of the 343 team worked on the original titles, I’m expecting a fresh yet familiar sound that will make for a great remake of a game that set the stage for First Person Shooters.

Planck Trailer Shows Sound You Can See

Music

PC Gaming

When I saw that there was going to be a music-based shooter, I thought it would surely be for kids and full of bright, happy colors. Although I was right about some of the bright colors, this is really a game for any age.

This shooter game goes by the name of Planck, and in this world, music is trapped in items which you have to shoot to set them free. As you go through a level, you are essentially building a track of music, and the better you do, the more awesome your music becomes.

The boss battles are looking to be pretty epic from what we can see in this trailer. These battles are meant to mess with tone of music rather than the notes themselves. Put out by Shadegrown Games, we will hopefully see Planck on the PC sometime in 2012. This is honestly one of the first games I can say I’m both excited to see, play, and hear.
Source

A Favored Song From Ocarina of Time Gets Reborn

Music

videos

Youtuber CoastCoastCoast has spent a lot of his time on a project that is very dear to him, as I am sure it is to all of us. We recently covered a story about it here. Well, she’s back with even more amazing video-game-gone-violin goodness!

This time the youtube star Lara6683 can be watched playing the Metal Gear Solid 2 theme on her violin. If she hasn’t proven she’s talented enough in her last video, then she certainly shows off her abilities in this one. Probably the most amazing part is the fact that she managed to play the entire thing by ear alone. It certainly did with mine! Why not check it out for yourself and see? The L.A. Noire official soundtrack is set to be released on May 17th, along with a special remixed version. Both soundtracks feature completely original tunes, and they will feature over 30 classic tracks from within the game itself. Artists such as Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, and Louis Armstrong will all make an appearance on the album.

The soundtracks will go live on iTunes on the same day that the game releases. The game’s score was recorded in London’s Abbey Road Studios, and is composed by Andrew Hale. Hale is known for producing the score for the film Scott Pilgrim vs The World.

No mention of price has been given, but I imagine both soundtracks will retail somewhere around $14.99 or so. Direct download from iTunes also ensures quick listening, and portable enjoyment. Be looking for both soundtracks alongside L.A. Noire’s release later this month.
Source
