On the other hand, a bad set of headphones can really detract from the gaming experience by not staying in place, hurting your ears over time, or simply by being uncomfortable. Having had a chance to test-drive the SteelSeries Siberia Neckband headphones and while they aren’t the nirvana of gaming headphones they still manage to be a cut above most.

This week Harmionix gives us a four-pack of downloadable tracks. Two from Rush and a Pair from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. What’s interesting is that one of the tracks is a re-release of a currently available track. “Working Man” from Rush is being released as a master track (the first time it was only a cover) which also includes an alternate solo. The new tracks are listed below.

Red Hot Chili Peppers “Snow (Hey Oh)”

Red Hot Chili Peppers “Tell Me Baby”

Rush “Closer to the Heart”

Rush “Working Man” (alternate-take master)

All four songs are master tracks, and will go for $2 each. No track pack this week.

The beta selection is completely random, so there’s nothing that you can do to better your chances (unless you have more than one paying account). Also, if you happen to be one of the lucky bastards that gets their name pulled out, you are welcome to give it to a friend or relative.

Yes, this means you can also likely sell it for a small fortune on eBay. However, doing so may very well win you the award for World’s Biggest Douche.

I’m beginning to wonder just how seriously some people take things like NDAs and industry secrets. Take for instance this screenshot that was recently shown on G4. I highly doubt that Harmonix wanted this to be seen, as it lists 11 tracks in Rock Band 2, 9 of which have not been announced. Of course I harbor no feeling of remorse for passing along the info to you guys.

One thing you should keep in mind is that Harmonix is constantly changing which tracks are going to be included for DLC (I would imagine the same holds true for the songs included on the RB2 disc). I wouldn’t be surprised if a few of these didn’t make the cut.

So, as most of you probably know by now, the Les Paul Guitar Hero controller for the PS3 does not work with Rock Band. Thankfully last week Harmonix completed a patch for the PS3 version of the game that allowed this controller to work with Rock Band. The patch was submitted to Sony, but wasn’t made for download. So what happened?

Rumors have been flying around as to what actually became of the patch. The most prominent being that Activision (publishers of Guitar Hero 3) stepped in and barred the patch from being released. Sadly, today that rumor was confirmed. Here is the post from the official Rock Band forums from the Harmonix team:

PS3 Guitar Compatibility - UPDATE 12/12/2007

Hi Everyone,

As we have said in the past, Harmonix and MTV Games believe in an open standard philosophy of hardware and game compatibility. We think that there should be interoperability between music instrument controllers across all music games. This is clearly in the best interest of consumers, game developers and console manufacturers and will only help to grow the music game genre as well as inspire innovation and creativity.

Two weeks ago, Harmonix created a software patch for the Sony PLAYSTATION 3 version of Rock Band that allowed for guitar compatibility and support for third party peripherals, including enabling use of Activision’s Guitar Hero III controller with Rock Band. The compatibility patch was submitted, approved and had been scheduled for release by Sony on Tuesday, December 4. Unfortunately, Activision objected to the compatibility patch’s release. The patch remains with Sony, but we have been told that it will unfortunately not be released due to Activision’s continued objection.

As is the case with the Microsoft Xbox360, we believe that Sony PLAYSTATION 3 users should be able to use the peripheral of their choice with Rock Band. We sincerely hope that Activision will reverse its decision and allow release of the compatibility patch and further, that Activision will allow Guitar Hero III to support Rock Band guitar controllers as well. We welcome all third party developers who wish to support our controllers and will provide any required support in order for them to do so.

We believe that when consumers have choice, everyone wins. Harmonix and MTV Games hope that Activision and others will also adopt this philosophy.

Sincerely,
The Harmonix Team

We’ve been spending a lot of time playing Rock Band here at GamerFront. Thankfully none of our instruments have had any of the issues that other people have been reporting. We’re also all pretty happy that we got a copy of the game for the Xbox 360, rather than the PS3.

No, it’s not that we hate the PS3, it’s that we don’t have to worry about having a spare guitar around. . As any of you with a PS3 likely already know, the Fender Stratocaster is currently the only guitar controller that works with the game. Those rocking out on the Xbox 360 still have the choice of using a Les Paul or X-plorer (or a modified SG, but that’s a story for a different day).

Since your controller options are limited, you’ll have to purchase two bundles (or hit up eBay) if you want to get the whole band together to play. Some of you might think you can beat the system by taking advantage of the warranty replacement program through EA, which will net you a brand new controller. That would be a great idea, but according to a the updated information on the site, failure to return a defective controller will cost you $125.

I’m not one to start a console war, but those of you that have both systems would do well to buy a bundle for the 360.

If you’ve found that your battery just isn’t up to snuff, you can throw down $45 and get yourself a 2200 mAh battery that will give you double the playtime of the standard battery, and comes with a pair of plastic covers.

The unfortunate thing is that the batteries won’t hit store shelves until mid-December. By that time most people have finished up most of their holiday shopping, so don’t bother putting it on your list this year.
