Silent Hill 8 Gets Renamed As Details Arise

Silent Hill 8 has been renamed, and Game Informer had the chance to get their hands on the first set of details that have surfaced about the new survival horror game from Konami.

The game has now been given the title of Silent Hill: Downpour, and the name gives detail to something that plays a crucial role in this new game – water. It seems this time around that water will trigger the appearance of the dilapidated, rust-covered Silent Hill that we all draw nightmares from.

Game Informer details a certain sequence early on in the game in which players find themselves in a diner. A sprinkler system activates unexpectedly and the entire room disintegrates into the town’s classic horror-themed version of itself, all with water cascading in multiples of unexplained directions.

In other aspects of the game players will see how Downpour plays somewhat like Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, using the same profiling system with decisions players make – from narrative choices, to the clothing they wear. Also like Shattered Memories is an emphasis on running from enemies just as much as fighting them. The game’s protagonist Murphy Pendleton can only hold one weapon at a time, and the enemies aren’t exactly pushovers.

The camera work in Downpour is nostalgic of early Silent Hill titles, which is a plus. Players will see the return of awkward, skewed camera angles, and the mechanic to switch between third-person and more cinematic perspectives as the game treks on.

Finally, and perhaps the most fascinating, is the fact that it looks like there will be much more Silent Hill to explore than we ever have experienced before. Vatra, the game’s developer, has made the game world big enough to require the use of the city’s tramway system to navigate around. There will be numerous side quests to explore by stumbling across clues on the journey, such as those in the school and hospital.

With this information at hand, I think I want to see some screens and gameplay of Vatra’s upcoming Silent Hill: Downpour. It sounds much like the game will be fun, and more expansive than what we players are used to.

What do you think?
