Cosplay Props Can Make Or Break You

Props! They’re flashy! They’re eye-catching! They help solidify your costume!

And sometimes they can be the biggest pain the rear to cosplayers.

Don’t get me wrong. Props are probably the coolest thing for most cosplayers. They can make a costume go from great to amazing. But then again, it can also bring a cosplayer down. Great seamstresses can make amazing clothing, but not be very good with their sculpey-staff-of-doom, so really, its all about deciding if making a prop is sincerely worth it.

On the other hand, amazing props can also make poorly tailored costumes the most amazing things people have laid eyes on.

Don’t believe me yet? Then check out some amazing props the next time you’re at a con. I’m sure you’ll change your mind if you saw something like this:

So really, as a cosplayer, you’ll have to ask yourself: Does my costume require an awesome prop? Do I have the material to make props? Will I have the patience and capability to make the props at the given moment of time?

If the answer to any are yes, then start out with someone simple (that is, if you’re new to the prop making world.) Don’t know what materials to use? Try starting out with Sculpey baking clay, Acrylic paint, and Modge Podge for a glassy finish. All can be found at general arts and crafts store, and are fun and easy for beginners.

If you’re under 18, be sure to be safe with your Sculpey when baking, keep an adult with you at all times.

And remember, half the fun of cosplaying is creating the costume! So enjoy yourself while attempting the prop and then don your piece of art with pride!
