Gears of War 3’s Unlockable Reward Will Be Chrome Skins, For Loyal Players

We’ve known since back in December that Gears of War 3 would feature unlockables that fans can receive by playing other Epic titles, like the first two Gears of War games before it. This past weekend the game’s Executive Producer, Rod Fergusson, let some information slip about the unlockables we can expect to see.

“If you did something in ‘Gears’ PC, you get a chrome skin, if you did something in ‘Gears 2’ you get a chrome skin. The chrome set is sort of our thank-you to people who have played our games in the past,” stated Fergusson in an interview with MTV Multiplayer.

So, before you throw your lancer across the room with rage, know that these won’t be all that the game is offering. Fergusson did say that there are more weapon skins tied to historical achievements. As an example, “Two of the weapon skins are based on historical weapon skins, so if you want the gold lancer and gold hammerburst in ‘Gears 3’ you get them by owning the gold hammerburst and gold lancer in ‘Gears 2,’ so those skins transfer over.”

So what should we derive from all this? The sweet unlockables that were promised to us months ago have turned out, so far, to merely be different multiplayer weapon skins. Please, we urge you to curb your excitement. There isn’t any unlockable which will offer any competitive advantage, though there isn’t any mentioned to date that is anything other than these skins. The unlock system will be based on achievements, so you better get back to Gears and Gears 2 to crack down on the ones you missed.
