The inhabitants of the nightmarish island of Banoi have seemed to inspire a film. Lionsgate have just announced a deal with Deep Silver and purchased the filming rights to the title. Apparently the original trailer for the zombie slasher prompted much response from Hollywood, and the film company was more than willing to jump on board for the idea.
The head of Lionsgate, Joe Drake stated that, “Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck. This is exactly the type of property we’re looking to adapt at Lionsgate – it’s sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love. It also has built in brand recognition around the world, and franchise potential.” At the present, Dead Island has seen over two million copies sold, which obviously shows that the game’s got more than just great potential.
There hasn’t been any word on the film’s release date, or even a projected production date. There is, however word from Deep Silver that fans should be looking forward to graphic novels, novels, and “other extensions” to come from the game. The film has already received a panel, though, which consists of Sean Daniel as producer, Stefan Sonnenfeld, Sarah Perlman, and Jason Brown. What else we know is that the film will focus on a family’s struggles on the island, which is overrun by the undead horde. What do you think?
