Being gamers, we’re no strangers to sequels – bad and good. Video game sequels can either make or break a franchise, and most of the time it’s the latter, unfortunately. This is a subject that surprisingly many gamers agree on, along with some developers. Steve Gibson, Vice President at Gearbox Software touched on this in this month’s issue of Edge mafazine, and brought up the developer’s new title Borderlands 2, which is still in production.
Gibson wanted to stretch his point across to the gaming community, making it clear what the developer’s plans were with the sequel. Speaking about the title, he stated:
“So many developers take the original game, shove in a bunch of new levels and add a ’2′ to the name. We don’t believe that games receive a true sequel that way. When we finished work on the first Borderlands in 2009 we began to think about what we might want to do next with the mythology. Almost immediately we bagan replacing or reworking just about every major system in the game.”
When a developer brings this kind of mentality to the table with a sequel, it can tip the scales in their favor. It’s great to see a developer such as Gearbox take their games so personally and devote their time to not only create a great sequel, but to create a brand new experience that fans will love all over again. With Gibson saying this about Gearbox’s approach to Borderlands 2, what do you think about it? What about gaming sequels in general?
