According to startupgrind.com, multiple sources are telling them that EA may be laying off 500 to 1000 people in the near future. This would equal to about 5% to 11% of EA’s total work force.
EA has had a bit of a tough year so far. Though they have sold quite a few copies of Battlefield 3 and Star Wars: The Old Republic, they have had their fair share of problems, from and expensive Popcap acquisition, to being named the worst company in America, and all the way to Zynga hiring many of EA’s former senior managers, including CFO Eric Brown. At this time, EA’s stock has gone from 61 dollars to 16 dollars, so it’s not surprising that we’re seeing these kinds of downsizing rumors coming about.
EA has released a statement saying that they are not laying off anybody as of yet. They did, however, state “Like all game companies, we make occasional adjustments to resize teams as project are completed and new priorities are established.” It seems to me that they are looking to get rid of people without having the stigma of a mass layoff on their heads.
