If you’re looking forward to the next Call of Duty, but know nothing about what it’s going to be about, circle the date of May 1st on your calender. That’s the date the Call of Duty franchise’s website is teasing as the World Reveal for the next Call of Duty game. The reveal itself will be shown during the NBA Playoffs on TNT.
Rumor has it that the “mystery” Call of Duty will be a sequel to Black Ops. This is backed by the fact that Activision purchased the domain blackops2.com, and that for a short while there was a listing in Amazon France that showed Black Ops 2 as well. The most solid piece of evidence comes from the teaser site as well, as people from the NeoGAF Forums looked in the source code of the page itself and found the following text: “2012 Activision Publishing, Inc. Activision and Call of Duty are registered trademarks and Black Ops is a trademark of Activision Publishing, Inc. All other trademarks and trade names are the properties of their respective owners.”
It wouldn’t be surprising to see the next Call of Duty be a Black Ops sequel, seeing that the first Black Ops sold over 14 million copies. However, I have to wonder if they might not try to take Call of Duty in a different direction, to freshen it up a little bit. At this time, Modern Warfare 3 is behind in sales to Black Ops at this time last year by 4.3%, and I’m curious to see if it’s because people are getting tired of the Modern Warfare aspect, or Call of Duty in general.
