Since I’ve gotten into what I’d consider professional gaming (pro for me at least) I’ve been fond of the Xbox 360. When it comes to consoles it’s just easier for me to pick out the 360 and talk about its high points. I wasn’t thrilled with the PS3 although I grew up with the PlayStation, and most of my favorite series lies with that console. When I started shopping around for reasons to buy myself a PS3, everyone was pointing me towards a game called Heavy Rain.
I decided to give in and pick up a system for myself. I wanted to try out Killzone 2 (one of my favorite shooter series), continue the Metal Gear saga, and give Resident Evil 5 a shot on the original updated platform. I scanned the game shelves and saw that Heavy Rain had dropped in price. The game was a pretty penny for a while since its original launch. I got home, got everything set up, and popped Heavy Rain in to give it a try. Little did I know I would lose my entire night to it.
After playing through the game, I can honestly say it’s the best title for the PS3. Whenever someone mentions picking up the system, I always push this game. Heavy Rain provided for me much more than a gaming session – it provided a brand new experience. I became attached to the characters. I felt myself mourning the loss of Ethan’s son. I felt depressed looking in on Ethan’s apartment after he split from his wife. I felt myself becoming a part of the game’s world. Quantic Dream had found a way to open players’ eyes to a new world of gaming, and they did it well. According to David Cage, the founder of Quantic Dream, the developer didn’t do as well as they could have.
“With the team, we were pretty much unhappy with everything. We thought we could have done a better job in all areas, and have better rendering, and better visuals, and better gameplay, and better everything.
We thought that sometimes in Heavy Rain there were moments where the balance wasn’t exactly right. We are working on new ways of merging this in a more natural and fluid way.”
Those were Cage’s words on the production and overall distribution of Heavy Rain. When I saw this, I was beside myself. Here I am telling people that Heavy Rain is THE best game on PS3, and Cage is shooting it down – his own title. In a way I guess I could understand. I’d rather have him ambitious and excited to do better going forward than to have him slouch and sit with the way things are. Quantic Dream plans to unveil their new title at E3 this year, and it’s something I don’t want to miss out on. Have any of you played Heavy Rain?
