Sega CEO To Step Down

Mike Hayes, CEO of Sega Europe and Sega America, will be stepping down from his role sometime this summer. He will be taking on different roles throughout the industry, and will remain with Sega in “advisory roles” if needed. There is no word yet from Sega about how they will fill the CEO role at this time.

Mr. Hayes ran the western side of Sega for the last 8 years, starting back in 2004. He oversaw the tenfold growth of the company as it transitioned from a console manufacturer to a multiplatform software developer and publisher. In the past, he was responsible for the re-launch of the NES in 1989, and launched the Gameboy in 1990 and the SNES in 1991.

Mr. Hayes’ stepping down comes after Sega’s American branch had to do some cost cutting measures to stay profitable, including game cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring. Besides the role of CEO, Mr. Hayes was also the COO of Sega Europe. That role will be taken over by Jurgen Post.
