Beyond: Two Souls – Quantic Dream’s New E3 Reveal [E3 2012]

During Sony’s press conference yesterday David Cage came on stage to finally reveal his company’s new project. A teaser video was shown, revealing that the new title is called Beyond: Two Souls. Quantic Dream has been working on this project for a while and slates it for a Q4 release, which means we’ll see it sometime from January to March of 2013.

The teaser was especially short, and it made very little sense. I remember asking myself, “What just happened?” more than a few times during the video. Sony says the game is a “unique, interactive psychological thriller [that] showcases a new generation of interactive drama gaming.” From what we’ve seen in the teaser, there will be a lot of psychic something going on in the game. We’ve also learned that Ellen Page will play the main character in the game, which is awesome considering the main character looks almost identical to her. It won’t be a situation like with The Last of Us where there’s just a resemblance, Ellen will actually be cast.

Quantic Dream recently stated that they were “unhappy with just about everything” in their Heavy Rain release for the PS3. The game still stands as a pillar to what can be achieved with the PS3’s hardware. From what we see in the teaser, Beyond looks like it will take things along the same road as Heavy Rain, visually at least, and put a bit more polish on the engine.

Though it was a short teaser, and probably the least satisfying one that Sony revealed, I’m pretty excited for the game. If Quantic is taking a bigger approach to this project, and wants it to be even better than Heavy Rain, we may have a fantastic game on our hands. I have no doubt that this will be another one of those “reasons to buy a PS3” titles.

A full trailer has since hit the net for the game since it’s reveal and it helps simplify things a bit more. In it we see the main character in a sherrif’s office being questioned. She was found on the side of the road and has been silent, apparently, for the entire time that she’s been under the sherrif’s watch. We see flashbacks of fire and the main character covered in blood, but don’t really know what the whole story is. As the sherrif notices a scar on the back of the main character’s head, his coffee mug is tossed from his desk at the wall. She offers a warning, and then the explosions start. It appears that she’s being pursued by special forces and S.W.A.T. teams for, what I assume, the fact that she has psychic powers. The game is looking interesting, and it’s something you’ll need to wrap your head around. Check out the trailer below.
