Retro Studios Is Working On Something, Nintendo Stays Quiet [E3 2012]

One big announcement I was hoping for during the Nintendo press conference at E3 was the hopeful reveal of a new Metroid title. I did enjoy Metroid: Other M though the community simply was appalled by it, but a new title would have been nice to see. Even if the announcement was for another FPS Metroid title, I would have been happy. Sadly, there wasn’t anything said, or even hinted at for anything Metroid.

In an interview with Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime after the conference, however, some questions were asked about what Retro Studios, the developer of the Metroid Prime series, had up their sleeves. Fils-Aime shyly beat around the question, though he answered it honestly. When asked what Retro is working on, Fils-Aime said:

“If I disclosed what Retro is doing, I would have the president of Retro calling me right now saying, ‘Reggie, what are you doing?’ We love that people are interested. We love surprising people.

I remember getting the questions before we announced Donkey Kong Country Returns. And I loved unveiling that. So… Rest assured, the team is hard at work. But I’m not gonna tell you what they’re working on.”

Whatever this project is, it must be big. Metroid fans are some of the most dedicated around, and I think it’s time we saw a completely new Metroid title. If it has anything to do with the Wii U, it could be a singular selling point for the new system. I’m looking forward to hearing more, whenever Fils-Aime spills the beans.
