Star Wars 1313 Doesn’t Have You As A Jedi And That’s A Good Thing [E3 2012]

Over the last two decades, if there’s been a Star Wars game you could bet easy money that it would involve Jedi and lightsaber combat in some form. In fact, the only games I can think of that didn’t involve you swinging a lightsaber around would be the space combat flight sims, and even Rogue Squadron 3: Rebel Strike had a few levels where you killed some bad guys with a lightsaber. So, it was a bit refreshing to hear that the next big Star Wars game, 1313, would not have your character be a practitioner of the Jedi arts in any way, shape, or form.

In an interview with Kotaku, LucasArts creative director Dominic Robilliard revealed why Star Wars 1313 isn’t going to have you run around as a Jedi.”It’s not that I think that that’s overdone. But the criminal underworld of 1313 is a little more grounded and that has to live in the mechanics of the game. Having mechanics that are limited by human ability makes things more relatable, then we can put all the cool stuff you can do into the gadgets and weapons.” To me, that’s pretty cool. Sure, I love flinging a lightsaber and decapitating a storm trooper as much as the next guy, but there’s only so much you can do with Jedi and lightsabers before it becomes stale.

In the end, it comes down to the fact that they don’t want you running around as a demi-god killing hordes of people with your lightsaber. Instead, you’ll have to use your wits, your gadgets, and perhaps a bit of luck as you track down your targets. At this time, there is no release date for 1313, and based on the fact that it’s being demoed on a PC with an Xbox 360 controller, it’s looking like 1313 might very well be a release date game for Microsoft’s and Sony’s next big consoles, which are rumored to be coming out late next year.
