StarCraft II: Heart Of The Swarn 99% Done

Blizzard belongs in a rare group of developers. Instead of giving a release date for a game 6 months to a year in advance and sticking with that date no matter what, Blizzard instead refuses to give any speculation on a release date until they’ve essentially taken the game gold. So no, at this time, there is no release date for the first expansion for StarCraft II, Heart of the Swarm.

But, I got a feeling that a release date announcement might be coming up in the next couple of months. According to lead designer Dustin Browder, Heart of the Swarm is “99% done, but that last 1%’s a bitch”. And based on the video that was released last week, I have to say that the game looks pretty much done.

With all the missions playable and the units in place, the only thing left is fine-tuning and polishing, and lets be honest, this is what’s going to take the most work. When you have 3 unique races, with brand new units that introduce new dynamics into the game, you have to make sure that there is a sense of balance, where a good player of one race has just a good of chance of playing a similarly skilled opponent of a different race. Once Blizzard gets that “golden ratio”, so to speak, expect an announcement to come soon after.
