The Last of Us Will Include Multiplayer, Though No Single-Player Co-Op

Both Creative Director Neil Druckmann and Game Director Bruce Straley from The Last of Us sat down with Gaming Examiner for an interview about some details on Naughty Dog’s upcoming action survival game. The interview covers a handful of questions that gamers have had since the first trailer released for the game, and the answers we received weren’t at all skimpy.

One of the first things we learned was that the game will incorporate multiplayer, though it won’t be in the form of co-op in the single-player campaign. Naughty Dog isn’t going too much into detail with what sort of multiplayer the game will have, but we know it will be a completely offset mode to single-player. From what we’ve seen before, we’re expecting some sort of multiplayer that pans out like what you see in Uncharted. There will be a sort of rugged war aspect where you’ll have some nameless NPCs that will shoot it out over various maps, probably infected and fighting for supplies.

The interview goes on to mention that the game will have a singular ending. Naughty Dog is a company that focuses on a defined story arc, and they’re applying that premise to this game as well. Though some things in The Last of Us will change depending on the actions players take, the game will end up telling the same story all the way to its final moments. Of course there will be plenty of opportunities to embark on some side quests that will let the player learn more about the game’s scenario and characters, such as interacting with movie posters and other objects. This opens up the game and even makes it more favorable to play through it more than once.

The Last of Us is going to be an amazing game, there’s no way to stifle my opinion on that. It’s going to be one of those games that makes players buy a PS3 just for it, and it will undoubtedly raise faith in what Naughty Dog does. I haven’t made it through the Uncharted series, simply because I haven’t found interest in them, but with the way this game is looking they’re becoming something I may need to check out.
