One of the more interesting features talked about during Microsoft’s E3 press conference was something they call “Smartglass.” This service allows you to get more interaction between your games and TV shows using your smart phone or tablet. One of the high-hitting games that was announced during the event was Watch Dogs, a game in which you have control over the digital world. It’s just been announced that Watch Dogs will use Smartglass functionality to add features to the game through a mobile app.
What many players didn’t know was that the E3 demo for the game gave a quick look at the app, which sees the game’s large open-world map rendered in a VR-type presentation. Using the app, players will be able to tap on different locations on the map to pick up information about them and place different hacking tools to work. There hasn’t been much announced as to how the app will interact with the game, and Ubisoft hasn’t outright confirmed support for Smartglass.
Players will also be able to track progress that friends are making through the game by checking the app. You can see not only how far along they are into the story, but the specific steps they’ve taken to get through each mission as well. Whenever you choose to check progress on the app a timeline shows up at the bottom of the screen. You can then cycle through this timeline to access specifics.
Finally, you’ll be able to interact with your friends’ games all through using the app. You can change traffic lights, raise drawbridges, and tons of other things like what was shown in the demo, all to help or hinder friends within the world. No details have been released on what operating system the app will run on, or which devices it will be compatible with. So far the app looks like it could be a lot of fun to use, though I wouldn’t want people messing with my game while I’m trying to make progress. We’ll just have to see what else surfaces about it and the game in the upcoming months.
