Late last week into early this week there was some news floating around that Square Enix had canned Final Fantasy Versus XIII. We haven’t seen any progress on it, and with the developer still working with Final Fantasy XIII-2 a lot of us have been wondering if the game has been shot to the wind. According to a tweet from Square CEO Yoichi Wada, the game hasn’t been put on the shelf and it’s still in production.
The tweet went as such: “It seems someone is spreading a false rumor about Versus being canceled.” He went on to say that he had just left “a regularly scheduled meeting for Versus.” Finally he added that “if you were to see the city etc. presented today, you wouldn’t be able to stand from surprise.” So, according to Wada the game is very much alive and breathing.
Still, the game has been off the grid since about a year ago, and it was originally announced back in 2007. Versus didn’t make an appearance at E3 this year, nor was it at the Tokyo Game Show. Square has been really selective with details about the game, and we’ve had to fish for any obtainable news about it. The last piece of news about Versus was that it would be running on Square’s Luminous Engine. The catch here is that we don’t really know too much about this mysterious engine. Is it next-gen? Is it something to do with ramping gameplay effects? Right now we don’t know, and we’ll have to wait for more answers.
