Steam, Left 4 Dead 2 Coming To Linux

In the beginning of its life, Steam was purely a Windows application. Then, as the Mac market really started to emerge, Valve took notice and ported Steam and several of their games to the Mac. Now it’s Linux’s turn, as Valve announced yesterday that Left 4 Dead 2 will be the first game to run on the popular, free operating system.

Valve introduced the idea of porting games to Steam a long time ago, but now it has something to show for its efforts. As revealed in their Linux blog appropriately titled “Steam’d Penguins”, they said that L4D2 now runs natively on Ubuntu 12.04. For those of you who aren’t into Linux, Ubuntu is one of many different distributions of Linux, and is one of the most popular out there.

The game hasn’t been released quite yet, because they’re still looking to get the game to perform as well under Linux as it does under Windows. That might take a bit of time, but hey, any time a company can get a game out there to more platforms is a good thing in my eyes! I may not be a Linux user, but I can appreciate the effort Valve is taking to get their games out among more people.
