DayZ Confirmed To Become A Standalone Title

DayZ, the ever-popular zombie survival mod for Arma II, has grown immensely in the time since it was originally released. There’s always a gamer here or there talking about it, and it’s got tons of dedicated followers. I have yet to pick up Arma II or the DayZ mod and I have my reasons for my reservation. One of those reservations is simply that if I get Arma II I know I’ll never play it. I’ll only get it for DayZ and I feel like it will be more money wasted than spent well. That reason is about to dissolve away, however, with the news that has just surfaced about the mod.

According to Dean “Rocket” Hall, the mod’s creator, DayZ will be releasing as a standalone game. This is confirmed news and Bohemia Interactive will serve as the game’s publisher, with Hall being the project lead. This comes straight from the DayZ blog, where the juicy news was spilled.

Hall wrote on the blog:

“That’s right, this is actually happening – DayZ will be developed as a standalone game, with me as project lead, by Bohemia Interactive. This is the fairy-tale outcome for a mod that many would have said was impossible four months ago.

Development and updated of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game, so anyone who is playing the mod now will be able to continue to do so. The project will follow the Minecraft development model; fast iterations with the community alpha available for a heavily discounted price.

I realize people will have many, many questions – but we wanted to let everyone know the announcement now. Over the coming weeks, these questions will be answered.”

That’s some great news and fans everywhere are overjoyed. The DayZ mod just surpassed one million users which is a giant milestone in itself. A retail version of the mod as a standalone game will no doubt bring in even more players, which will also give cause for more updates, features, and much more. There’s no details on how long this process will take, but Hall tells us to check back on the official DayZ site for more information as it comes along.
