While many people are quick to label the Vita as being dead in the water, Sony isn’t playing that game. They’ve continued to update the system’s firmware in the hopes that by adding enough new features more people will come buy it. Now while I’m not suggesting that 1.80 firmware update is going to actually cause anybody to purchase the system, it’s certainly can’t hurt!
The features in this update include the ability to navigate the front panel using the D-pad, an improved browser that allows your to use the back touch screen to scroll, an improved notifications menu, and the Cross Controller capability is finally able to be used. However, perhaps one of the biggest things to come out for some of you PlayStation Classic fans is the fact that with this firmware update you’ll be able to play those classic PlayStation games on your Vita. The releases are being staggered weekly, but the first games that are available for download include Arc the Lad, Cool Boards 2, Hot Shots Golf 2, Jet Moto, Syphon Filter, Twisted Metal 2, Wild Arms, and of course, Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy VII. The games will be made available for purchase sometime today, though if you already own them on the PS3 or PSP, you’ll be able to download them from your account, free of charge.
At the time of this writing I’m currently downloading the new 1.80 firmware, though Sony’s Vita system update page is still showing the 1.69 version as being the most current firmware. This update should be released soon, “officially”, if it hasn’t already. I won’t lie, though, I’m pretty excited about this update, especially since there are 4 games on that list that I want to download immediately!
