Gearbox Explains What Golden Key In Borderlands 2 Really Does

Ok, so you’re pretty stoked about Borderlands 2, so much so in fact that you decided to pre order it from either Amazon, GameStop, or Best Buy. It doesn’t really matter which, honestly. Point is, you’ve pre ordered it and its come with some pretty cool stuff as a bonus, such as the Mechromancer character class, the Vault Hunter’s Relic, the Gearbox Gunpack, and… a Golden Key?

The Golden Key’s use is pretty simple: it unlocks something. Turns out that “something” is a Golden Chest in the “friendly” city of Sanctuary, and what’s inside is pretty awesome. You see, when you open the chest you’ll get some very rare (purple) quality items that scale to your character’s level.

Let me repeat that last part: the items are scaled to your level. So yes, if you wanted to you could rush to Sanctuary and open the chest immediately, but after a few levels those items are going to be useless, and once you use your key it’s gone forever. So instead, what Gearbox recommends is for you to wait awhile until you get a higher level, when you’re really hurting for a nice new weapon!

Borderlands 2 will be released on September 18th.
