With the release of the Wii U last week, many people are wondering about when Microsoft and Sony are going to make their move into a new generation of consoles. We’ve heard rumors that those companies are working on new consoles, but up until this point nothing definitive has been released yet. We are, however, hearing some juicy rumors concerning when the next Xbox is coming out. According to sources close to Microsoft, the next Microsoft console, codenamed Durango, should be coming out sometime in the holiday season in 2013.
Releasing a console around the holiday season has worked for Microsoft in the past, and I see no reason why their next console should be any different. After all, it’ll become the must-have item of the year, and it’ll be sure to sell out as hordes of people attempt to get their hands on one. Not only that, but if the new Xbox is sufficiently more advanced than the Wii U then Microsoft might even pull a few away from Nintendo and make the next Xbox their primary console, because from what people have been able to tell the Wii U isn’t that much more powerful than the Xbox 360 or the PS3, consoles that have been out for 6 or 7 years at this point.
At this point it’s unknown as to when the console will be officially revealed to the public. While Microsoft could wait all the way until June to announce the new console, I’ve got a feeling that doing just that might be cutting things a little close with what is likely to be a November release date. Instead, I wouldn’t be too surprised if Microsoft has their own event to talk about their new console, and use E3 to announce and showcase things like launch titles, different features (including a rumored Kinect 2), and maybe even pricing.
