Nintendo’s TVii App Launches Today

Do you own a Wii U? Are you sick of having to put down the GamePad whenever you want to watch TV? Well, it looks like you’re finally in luck, because the TVii app has finally made it to North America, and what’s more, it’s completely free!

The TVii app lets you control your cable box and television from the Wii U GamePad like any other controller. You’re able to change the channel, adjust the volume, and even look at the channel guide on the GamePad! But that’s not all that the app does: you can use the app to look up reviews, IMDB pages for the show you’re watching, and Wikipedia entries as well. Social media is also part of the app, and in fact the TVii app can be personalized for everyone in the household.

Unfortunately the TVii app isn’t coming with all the features that Nintendo had promised earlier in the year. Due to issues with striking a deal with cable/satellite TV providers there will be no DVR support for the app. Also, Netflix and TiVo will not be available for the app as well, but it’s projected that those two services will become part of the TVii app starting early next year, if all goes according to plan.
