When free-to-play games started to rise, we saw a new form of DLC rise up. Due to their low cost, they were dubbed “microtransactions.” When you see these in games that you’ve paid little to nothing for, it’s not surprising. After all, the developer/publisher needs to be able to make money off their hard work, right? But what happens when you start seeing these same paid unlockables on large AAA titles?
EA has announced that there will be 11 piece of DLC available for Dead Space 3 at launch. These aren’t extra levels, or other interesting content that adds more to the story. Rather, they are new suits, weapons, and the ability to speed up your loot collection. We’ve mentioned this before, but we weren’t quite sure how many of these microtransactions there were, or how much they would cost.
These boosts and upgrades will range from $0.99 to $4.99. This puts them in line with the sort of transactions you’d see on cheap or free mobile games, which is apparently exactly what EA is shooting for. I definitely don’t feel comfortable paying to upgrade my character in a game that I’ve already shelled out $60 for. Unfortunately, if this does become successful, you can bet that EA will make this a staple in many future titles.
