As many of you are most likely aware of by now,Battlefield 4 will be coming out by the end of the year. It’s due to be released on most of the major systems: the PS3, PS4, PC, and the Xbox 360, and most likely the next Microsoft console. However, it was confirmed that the Wii U won’t be getting the game, and that can spell dire consequences for other EA published games.
It turns out that the company who has made the Frostbite 3 engine, DICE, hasn’t developed the engine to work on the Wii U. So who cares, right? It’s not like BioWare’s RPGs Dragon Age 3 and the next Mass Effect are using that engine, right? Wrong. It was also announced recently that their new RPGs are also using the Frostbite 3 engine, and so, it stands to reason that those games won’t be making it to the Wii U anytime soon either.
Nintendo has had a problem the last few console generations with getting third-party support, and despite an assurance that history wouldn’t repeat itself with the Wii U, that’s exactly what is happening right now. Major franchises, from most EA games, to BioShock Infinite, to Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and Tomb Raider have all snubbed the console. Will the Wii U eventually get some better third-party support? It’s possible, though I have a feeling that it’ll have to sell a lot more consoles before developers decide to make the effort.
