IPL6 eSports Tournament Seems To Be Cancelled [Rumor]

If you were planning on attending or competing in the IGN ProLeague 6 event later this month, I’m afraid I have some bad news. According to GameSpot, who has “multiple sources close to the situation” it looks like the event, which is scheduled from March 28th through the 31st, has been cancelled. At this time however the IPL website is still selling tickets to the event, although they apparently have removed links on the front page to reserve hotel rooms for the weekend.

Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that the IPL has been sending back products to the sponsors that they had sent to the tournament in the first place. Also, OnGameNet revealed yesterday that the League of Legends Korean qualifiers have been cancelled. The reason given is that there have been a “change in management policies and financial difficulties.”

It appears that the reason why the tournament is being cancelled in the first place has to do with the fact that J2 Global, who also owns Ziff Davis, purchased IGN early last month. According to an internal memo that was leaked, the company is looking to sell off IPL in order to “broadcase and cover a variety of eSports events”. Here’s hoping that somebody picks up IPL soon then, in that case!
