SimCity Offline “Just Not Possible” According To Maxis

There’s been a bit of a disturbing trend in the last few years. Games from big companies are having their single player forced online, all because games are “too sophisticated” and are so closely integrated with online multiplayer that offline single player is no longer an option. Unfortunately for gamers everywhere this leads into problems, when a big game is released and all the online servers crash from the sudden influx of people trying to play the game.

Such was the case of SimCity last week, as it’s been close to a week and the game is still suffering from instability problems and long server queues. And while the gamers have been clamoring for an offline mode, don’t expect to see it anytime soon. According to Maxis General Manager Lucy Bradshaw, because the entire region is simmed on the server taking it offline is “just not possible”. However, she didn’t completely rule it out, as in a tweet she said that they would be looking into taking it offline in an effort to “earning back your trust”.

Maxis might not be willing and able to find an offline solution, but you know what? I’m willing to bet that before too long somebody out there is going to create a crack that’ll do such a thing. Really, given the fact that anything and everything tends to get cracked within days of release, it’s just a matter of time.
