Earthbound Finally Released On Wii U Virtual Console

Earthbound is one of those games that while not a ton of people are aware of it, it has a cult following unlike anything I’ve seen. Fans have been making translations and ports of the SNES game and its sequel for years, and that’s unlikely to stop anytime soon. Thus, it wasn’t too surprising to hear from Nintendo back in April that they were going to put Earthbound on the Wii U Virtual Console, giving folks the world over the opportunity to play this game once again.

In a Nintendo Direct Mini video yesterday Nintendo announced that they were releasing Earthbound immediately. You can now buy the game on the Wii U Virtual Console for $9.99. Nintendo has also made available the strategy guide for the game for free, and has been optimized for viewing on the Wii U GamePad.

Of course, you can’t mention Earthbound without mentioning its Game Boy Advance sequel, Mother 3. Nintendo has yet to say anything about Mother 3 coming out to the states, and sadly they probably won’t anytime soon. I would guess, however, that if sales of Earthbound were particular good Nintendo might just get around to translating that game into English and releasing it for the 3DS.
