Half Life 3 Not In Development, According To Valve Voice Actor

Despite never having an official announcement or anything, Half Life 3 is perhaps the world’s most anticipated game. After all, it’s been 6 years since HL2’s second episode, and since then millions of fans have been eagerly awaiting any hint of a sequel. In fact, it’s gotten so bad that a glitch in a recent HL2 update convinced many folks that Half Life 3 was just around the next corner!

According to Valve voice actor John Patrick Lowrie, however, Valve is not currently working on HL3 as far as he can tell. Here’s what he had to say about why they’re not working on it: “As far as I know they are not developing HL3 now for several reasons, among them the mo-cap issue.” In the end, it comes down to motion capture issues.

While mo-cap is great for cutscenes and other scripted cinematics, according to Lowrie, it’s not very good for more free-formed events. Until Valve can work with the technology in a way that’ll let them get the results they want without an undue amount of work, I wouldn’t expect to see HL3. Then again, this could just be part of the long con, and it’s well in production now for all we know.
