Will There Ever Be a Sequel to Microsoft Classic Quantum Break?

And for fans of Quantum Break, the action-adventure third-person shooter video game first released in 2016, that speculation only serves to highlight just how successful this sleeper hit from Remedy Entertainment was for the Xbox One. A system practically starving for exclusive titles, Quantum Break’s positive critical reception and hanging narrative make it the perfect candidate for a follow-up game.

But will it ever happen?

Probably not if recent statements by Remedy Entertainment CEO Tero Virtala to Games Industry.biz are to be believed. When asked about a sequel to the game, Virtala responded that there won’t be a Quantum Break 2 because Microsoft does not want a sequel to the game.

How’s that for pretty cut and dry?

Whether the game didn’t meet internal expectations for sales or if it was only ever intended as a one-off title remains murky but we do know that, given modern gaming development budgets, anything less than a blockbuster success often spells doom for a new IP.

If this is the case with Quantum Break then it is understandable why Microsoft is hesitant to throw more money at the franchise.

Interestingly, while Vertala conceded that the rights to the intellectual property rests in Microsoft’s hands, Remedy Entertainment, for its part, would be interested in exploring the possibility of a sequel to Quantum Break if given the opportunity. This would require that the dev first own the rights to the property in question but Vertala’s offhand comment is interesting in its implications nonetheless.

Microsoft Global Games Publishing rep Shannon Loftis cited the game as an example of a property that the company could do more with in the future. She further emphasized that the company needs to “stick with” its new IP in the future. This is probably easier said than done, especially when the new game isn’t making the money you were expecting but, given the importance of exclusive content, it would probably be in the best interests of console manufacturers to secure as much successful exclusive IP as possible. We see this play out with especially important consequence in the streaming wars between Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and the rest. Why wouldn’t this phenomenon impact video games in the same way?

In reality, it does, as Sony and Nintendo have proven the power of exclusive content to move units this generation. Sony, in particular, has harvested the advantages of exclusive content with hit after hit coming to shelves that will never have the chance of coming to rival Xbox or the Big N’s systems. This has helped the console giant regain its footing after losing its place to Nintendo’s Wii in the last console generation. Analysts expect that exclusive content will not only become more important in the future but could also transform into a decisive factor in the relative success or failure of a console.
