DC Universe Online Is Going Free-To-Play In October
Coming this October, the comic book-inspired MMO, DC Universe Online, will be making the big move to the Free-To-Play section, which is quickly becoming a genre within itself in the gaming world. Sony Online Entertainment confirmed the move earlier, and noted that both the PS3 and PC versions of the game will be receiving this treatment.
Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley said about the game, “When we launched DC Universe Online, we introduced a very different brand of massive online game driven by fast action combat to PC and PS3 gamers and with that, we discovered a new type of online gamer. We’ve listened to our community, and we’ve determined that the free-to-play model is the best fit for DC Universe Online.” So far, there will be three different ways to play the game: Free, Premium, and Legendary. Let’s take a look at each option as it plays out:
- Free – All new players will have access to all current gameplay content in the game, and the ability to create two characters. These players will be able to purchase download packs, additional character slots, powers, and more through the game’s new microtransaction features.
- Premium – Any player who has spent at minimum $5 USD will have access to the Premium version of the game. These players will have access to more benefits including more character slots, additional inventory slots, and higher cash limits.
- Legendary – Players who receive Legendary status will have the maximum level of benefits and features. Legendary access will be available for the $15 monthly fee, and includes all DLC packs at no cost.
This is a great way to get new players into the game, all while keeping the subscriber base that the MMO is accustomed to. It’s also a great way for new players to check out the game, and casual players to keep their wallets at an acceptable level. What do you think about this new move?
