Minecraft Will Never Be Done
Developer and beloved internet celebrity Markus “Notch” Persson created Minecraft, and took the game to dizzying heights. At some point close to 2011’s Minecon, Notch handed over lead developer status to Jens “Jeb” Bergensten. This was done to give Persson the ability to work on another project. However, just because there’s a change in leadership doesn’t mean that things are going to go off the wall. Jeb and Notch have pretty similar ideas when it comes to the game, so things should just continue to improve rather than drastically change.
In an interview done by Gamasutra, Bergensten explained that with such a small team, there’s no way to compete with other games in having the most features. They chose to instead focus on the engine so that developers can add in mods all they like. That and making sure that the servers are chugging along smoothly seem to be the top priorities. The gamers have spoken and they provided the best Minecraft Server List there is right now.
It may have seen an official release back in November of last year, but it’s looking like it will never officially be done. If it were to be officially finished, that would likely take quite a bit away from the community. Modders would still be doing their thing, but the public voice would lose a great deal of its impact. All in all, this is a great model to follow, as it is truly staying to its user-creation origins.
