If you listen to certain gamers you’ll find that there’s one game that always seems to get the short end of the stick. For years they have been clamoring for a re-release of the game Earthbound, also known as Mother 2 in Japan, but time and time again Nintendo has refused. Some more pessimistic folks have probably claimed, however, that the only wayEarthbound was going to make its way State-side again is when Hell has frozen over.
Well folks, it looks like Hell has frozen over after all. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has announced that the game will be released on the Wii U Virtual Console at some point later in the year. Unfortunately, he didn’t have a specific release date, but considering the wait some fans have had to endure I’m sure a few more months will be like nothing.
At this point, the only thing fans really have to complain about is Earthbound’s sequel, known in Japan as Mother 3. The game was never released in the West, though with the Virtual Console up and running it isn’t too farfetched to see it happening eventually. If I had to guess, I’d say that Nintendo wants to see how well Earthbound sells before they make the effort in translating Mother 3.
