Cosplay Guide – Cross Play Do’s And Dont’s

Cross-play is another form of cosplay that involves one gender cosplaying as the
opposite gender. It’s a way for cosplayers to not only lose themselves in
a character, as normal cosplay does, but experience the entire new world of opposite sex
(or, as most girls do it, a chance to get some yaoi cosplay action.)
Some people think that cross-play is harder than normal cosplay. So for those of
you who honestly believe that, here’s a quick list of do’s and don’ts for when you create
your dream yaoi couple (or yuri?)

1. DO keep within your comfort boundaries.

The first mistake any cosplayer does is attempt a cosplay that
they’re simply not comfortable with. If someone is a guy and
they want to do a female character that only uses a bikini to cover
her junk, then the cosplayer must make sure they’re comfortable
enough to run around in said bikini rather than awkwardly standing
around at the con being “that guy.” Candylion is quite a legend in the cosplay world.

2. DON’T be afraid to make a character pretty/masculine.

For example: girls who cosplay link. For Christ’s sake the guy
already wears a skirt! So put that make-up on, glisten some make-
up on some cheeks, and find that purple link from four swords to
make some pretty boy-boy action.
And for the guys out there… Take action like the famous “man-
faye” did. He created his favorite character and made her a manly
man (kind of..) So if you love the characters that much, grow out a
beard, pull on those short shorts, and give your biggest smile!

3. DO have a good sense of humor.

If someone is cross-playing, chances are they’ll get some sort of
comment ridiculing their costume. But when doesn’t this happen
for any cosplayer? The best thing to do for cosplayers in situations
like this is to keep their head high, laugh off anything that’s said
negatively, and ENJOY their costumes. After all, they should be
enjoying the work of art they made themselves!

4. DON’T take everything so seriously.

This is probably one of the most important points… If someone
cross-plays, be sure to never take anything too seriously. Cross-
play is all about fun and games (as cosplay should be too.) So if a
person can’t manage to have a sense of humor, at least take the bad
with a grain of salt.
